Heidi’s bio reads…
Following degrees in English Language & Literature and Secondary Education, with a minor in Theatre, Duncan concentrated, by and large, on writing and acting. In 1996, she created her own business in costume design and construction, mostly focusing on historic fabric and design. She has worked in the theater and film world since 1995, acting on stages up and down the East Coast, and directing and producing shows in Boston and New York. She co-founded two acting companies, marrying the performing arts, the written arts, and education. In Venice, Italy in 2001, she began experimenting in the visual arts, eventually transitioning from pencil and ink to oils.
We’re so proud of your artistry, Heidi!
“Create your own work”? MCS students – do just that. Congrats to the creative team and cast of WATCH OUT, BLOOD FEATHERS, now playing in NYC!
MCS’ Gabrielle Aris presents the debut work of writer/director (and fellow MCSer) Laurie Rose Savage.
Come out and see WATCH OUT, BLOOD FEATHERS: A Play About Family in Three Acts, now showing at The Celebration of Whimsy (21-A Clinton Street, NYC)
“The details of childhood can be both distinct and woefully inaccurate, and the Black family siblings don’t often agree. In this frequently funny, more often heartbreaking play, a family reunites in their beloved antique home, searching for sanctuary, salvation, and a common version of the truth. You never know who might come calling during this unorthodox stroll down memory lane… family can be tricky that way. Welcome home, kids.”
Starring MCS students and alumni:
Courtney Case, Nina Salza, Joe Thanner, Diane Dreher, KJ Hippensteel*, Terria Joseph* and Matthew Labanca*
Feb 3, 4 and 6th

When he meets Sylvia—who’s going deaf herself—Billy decides it’s time to speak on his own terms, sending shock waves through the family. Playing out in sign language, argument, music, and mesmerizing silence, this sophisticated drama examines family, belonging, and the limitations of language. “I love when people ask me how I got into acting, its one of my favorite stories to tell because it involves one of my best friends and MCS. Two things I do not know how I ever lived without! The story goes like this, I started at MCS almost 3 years ago because my girlfriend, Stephanie Schreiber, recommended it to me. I was frustrated with dance and needed an artistic outlet. Then after a year and a half of of taking this class twice a week for countless hours and being perfectly content Matthew dared to ask the question, are you auditioning? It never occurred to me to actually become an actress this ignited a fire in my belly and my heart that excited and scared me beyond belief, so naturally I knew I had to do it!
Anthony Wayne and Colin Cunliffe we are proud of you. Anthony has been part of MCS since he was in Broadways’ ANYTHING GOES and PRISCILLA, QUEEN OF THE DESERT. Colin started MCS right before out-of-town workshop of PIPPIN. Anthony and Colin are now performing in Broadway’s PIPPIN.

“I came to MCS a mere two months ago and I’ve already seen enormous changes in my acting and my career (and my life!) I am amazed at what comes out of myself and others in every single class. It often isn’t easy – I often leave tear-stained and completely emotionally exhausted…but at the same time, I LOVE it. MCS has helped me to discover the life inside me that I didn’t know was there, and has taught me how to USE this in my acting. I’ve begun to use what I’ve learned in class at auditions, have felt ENORMOUSLY more connected to my work, and now I’m seeing results! Joining MCS is truly one of the best things I’ve ever done for myself, and already my life is changing. I couldn’t be more happy, grateful, and in love with this art! Thank you Matthew!”–Shaina Vencel

We are so proud of our very own Spencer Lofranco, who is the star of the major motion picture JAMESY BOY, out for release this year. Spencer plays the title role alongside film veterans Mary-Louise Parker and James Woods.
Spence recently moved out to L.A. to continue press for the film, but studied in the Tuesday/Thursday night class up until moving day! Of his time studying with Matt, he says,
“I love Matt’s class. I’m always excited for class because he makes it fun, but at the same time, its serious and focused. Matthew has tremendous love for all his students and is extremely passionate about helping you get out of your head and becoming totally invested on the other person. ‘Acting is living and BEHAVING TRUTHFULLY and fully, under imaginary circumstances.’ This quote is what I have learned by taking Matt’s class. Sounds easy… and it is, once you can let go. By taking Matt’s class I have figured out how to let go of everything that has held me back from expressing my truth to imaginary circumstances. I truly have a clear understanding of my capabilities as an artist by falling in love with the repetition exercise. It allows you to act freely and and gives you permission to actually be yourself, with no sensors or rules. The world is yours and everything in it. Get out there, get on your grind, and get it.”
We can’t WAIT to see you on the big screen, Spencer! Congrats on JAMESY BOY!

Congrats to our Resident Photographer, David Gazzo, opening onstage this week in ROPE at The Attic Ensemble. David is a valued member of the MCS family, studying with Matt for years and appearing in numerous readings here at the studio. Proud of you, David!
ROPE runs Nov. 11th (“Pay What You Can” performance!) – Nov. 18th at The Attic Ensemble in Jersey City, New Jersey.
“The inspiration for a film masterpiece by Alfred Hitchcock, ROPE by Patrick Hamilton is set on the first floor of a house in Mayfair, London in 1929. The story, thought to be based loosely on the Leopold and Loeb murder case, concerns two young university students, Wyndham Brandon and Charles Granillo who have murdered fellow student Ronald Kentley as an expression of their supposed intellectual superiority. At the beginning of the play they hide Kentley’s body in a chest. They proceed to host a party for his friends and family at which the chest containing his corpse is used to serve a buffet.”
For ticket info and updated show schedule, please visit ROPE.
SON OF A GUN is billed as, “A quirky, darkly comic, folk/rock musical that tells the story of Danderhauler Agamemnon Khrusty, the eldest of three sons of Winston and Elmadora Khrusty, and the heir apparent to the throne of the Khrusty family Appalachian band. Dan’s life is dominated by the charismatic personality of his father, a highly-functioning, highly-entertaining alcoholic. He must find a way to confront both his dead father and his own demons; he does both by means of an old fashioned cowboy duel.”
Ryan is an asset to this studio in more ways than one. Not only a gifted actor, but also a natural leader, Ryan has been studying with Matthew for years and continues in the Tuesday/Thursday night class.
We can’t wait to come see your show, Ryan!
For more info, visit SON OF A GUN.

Margaret is a valued member of the Monday/Wednesday night class taught by Ryan Tofil. Of her studies here, Margaret says, “Being in class at MCS is one of the best things I could have done for myself as a performer and a human being. In the past 8 months Ryan and the M/W class have challenged me to be fuller, truer, and deeper. MCS is truly a safe space for full expression, a gym for your art where you can get messy, get broken, get whole, and most importantly get out of your head!!”

Ephrat Asherie Dance (EAD) presents A SINGLE RIDE - a multimedia dance show that explores the complex relationships between New Yorkers and the subway. “Riding the train can evoke some of our most primitive emotions, anger and frustration, or it can stir in us what makes us most human, our compassion and empathy.” Choreographer and current MCS student Ephrat “Bounce” Asherie (NMQP, “brothers”) reflects on these emotions by fusing the underground styles of breaking, house and vogue with a contemporary aesthetic. She asks the fundamental questions: Where are we going? Where do we come from? And, where is that train? Original music composed by Grammy Award winner Marty Beller, lighting by Tim Cryan, projection design by David Bengali, and set design by Luke Clark Tyler.
